Life is a process of healing

Our physical bodies are constantly self-regulating, by processes of homeostasis, and cellular apoptosis and renewal is the healthy norm. We live our lives, and experience the world around us, whilst our bodies usually manage the incredible feats of self-regulation, self-renewal, and healing.

However, the modern health problems of our era are chronic diseases. These have replaced the acute diseases, which conventional medicine now manages so well.

Chronic disease presents a new paradigm, which requires patients to be actively engaged in the management of their condition. Self-care and self-management are essential for the treatment of chronic disease.

Aceso (pronounced As-ee-so) was the Greek goddess of the healing process. She was the sister of Hygieia and Panacea, but unlike her sister Panacea (Cure-All) she represented the process of a curing, rather than the cure itself.

“Lifestyle medicine forms a bridge with public health and health promotion” (Egger et al, 2011).
